I was reading over at Shoemoney, and came across an old post of him grieving about some of the bad experiences he recently had with theplanet.com, and I couldn’t help but feel connected with the post.

When we, first made the move from shared hosting to a dedicated server, late last year, we chose to go with ev1servers.net (now merged with theplanet.com), since it came highly recommended. We started with the with a basic package and within a month, our server load was getting ridiculously high from unoptimized mysql queries, and we made the decision to graduate to a faster server. In hindsight, the whole issue of high server loads, could have been resolved by optimizing our scripts, instead of throwing expensive hardware at the problem; however, the purpose of this post isn’t to point out our stupidity, but to share our unpleasant experiences with ev1servers.com/theplanet.com.

So you see, after switching servers, we emailed ev1servers and requested to cancel our old server. Sales was kind enough to point us in the right direction. We thought we through the required steps (there were many of them), and received various confirmations for each step, which falsely assured us that the server was canceled. However, a month later, we were horrified to find out that all the required steps weren’t completed every step for the cancellation to be completed. In fact, we missed one step, and as a result we were billed for a server that we weren’t even using anymore. Apparently, the tech team got our message and put the server offline; however, the audit department was not informed of the cancellation.

I could understand the need for cancellation confirmations; however, I felt that ev1servers.net/theplanet.com made service cancellation a bit too complicated. As a customer the last thing I want to deal with is having to go through red tape to get what I want.

Fortunately, we did get a partial refund for the extra charge; however, the whole experience prompted us to switch hosting companies.

I’m happy to say that we are now hosted with the greatest hosting company ever. We currently have a small server at steadfast.net and they have the best technical support on the planet.
